A Study on the Artistic Expression of Organic Mechanism in the Senses of Insects -Yeoul Son

■ Abstract

While discovering ways to integrate and connect concepts such as matter and the mind, non-human and human, and machine and nature, we created an organic software inspired by insect senses.

In the form of hair follicles, insect sensory organs transmit external responses through nerve cells and neurons, induce various body responses, and play an essential role in survival that involves communication and mating. With horizontal structures, diversity, continuous feedback and evolutionary concepts in mind, we applied drawing and 3D animation to create a movable, transformable, and modularizable organic model from the simple and fundamental structure and form of the insect sensory system.

Production of the digital organism model, ‘Chemul### & Scolul###’, was founded on the concept above. Based on this model, the following works were created. 'House' (2009) expresses space in the organic information processing system, 'Block Module' (2010) expresses the integration of protein & silicon, and the ubiquitous prosthetic ecology and environment, 'Alive' (2012) is a digital organism reinterpretation of Mark Rothko's abstract color field painting, ‘Sacred Dome’ (2009) is a system where two opposing elements cooperate and harmonize mutually as if dancing in a pair, and lastly, ‘Mechanical Liberation’ (2010) expresses technology evolution and its potential.

Through this organic system, we present a mind & matter, human & non-human integrated future model based on meta-realism to seek and propose ways for the coexistence of technology and human nature.
